Librarian merges CRAN, GitHub, and Bioconductor package installation and management into one consistent interface, which means that you can deal with packages in your code without breaking your train of thought. Installing and attaching packages from these different repositories can be done with:
shelf(dplyr, DesiQuintans/desiderata, phyloseq)
Instead of having to deal with this:

Librarian makes it fast and easy to try out new packages; just add them to the shelf()
call. Since Librarian handles package installation for you, you won’t have to uncomment those package installation lines or wrap them in an if
to prevent them from installing more than once.
Librarian also presents a consistent user interface. The core functions shelf
, unshelf
, and reshelf
all accept multiple package entries, provided as a comma-separated list of unquoted names. This means no maintaining ""
around package names, no inconsistency around whether a function will accept names or whether it needs strings, and no inconsistency around whether you can provide a list of packages to a function or whether the function will only accept a single item at a time.
Finally, Librarian comes with tools for loading packages at the start of every session, managing your library folder locations, and discovering new packages on CRAN by searching with keywords or regular expressions.
You can install librarian from CRAN or from GitHub. The GitHub version is under constant development, but it has more features and it is stable for daily use (it’s the one this author personally uses, after all).

You can get Librarian (and any package) to load automatically when R starts. You can also ask R to load folders into the package search path, which is handy if you keep your packages on the cloud like I do.

Caution! Pre-loading packages is really convenient but you should be careful about how you use it. It’s very easy to pre-load all of the packages that you routinely use and completely forget to actually include them in your script, much to the confusion of someone who tries to run your code on a different machine.
Packages with just a package name default to installation from CRAN.

If the package didn’t exist on CRAN, it might be a Bioconductor package. It will be installed from Bioconductor only if Biobase
is already installed in your library.

You can install all three in the same shelf()

You can force all listed packages to reinstall with the update_all
argument.

There is a shortcut for unattaching and reattaching packages (for example, if you want to reload the new build of your personal package).

to interact with your library locations.

Use browse_cran()
to search package names and descriptions. For example, maybe you can’t remember what the “colorbrewer” package is actually called.

Or maybe you’re looking for packages that can help you with a particular task, like using a zero-inflated statistical model on abundance data.

(PS. I genuinely didn’t know about this package until I contrived this example for the vignette, but it looks like it would be perfect for my work :O)
You can also do fuzzy orderless matching, it’s a little slow but it will get you results on tricky searches:

(Note that in the non-fuzzy example, the search returns no hits because it’s trying to find “network” and “api” and “twitter” in that order, but the fuzzy search was able to match them out-of-order.)
